Purely Liminal Magazine Issue 5: SPITTELMARKT
18 stops east of U2-Olympiastadion is Spittelmarkt. Part of Mitte Bezirk, it found itself as one of the western-most reaches during a divided Berlin. Surrounded by concrete and wire on three sides—Mitte was quite literally encapsulated by the Mauer. Standing at the entrance to Spittelmarkt today, east and west becomes immediately evident.
Erosion is rarely an invisible process; we know about borders, we’ve heard what induces them—that makes us interested in the aftermath. What happens in the wake of reunification? How do we reconcile the ecstasy of November 9th 1989 with the resentment that still lingers?
Issue 5 explores division—both the literal and the abstract; what is it like to see exist within those ‘between’ and unnamed places? Issue 5 is Spittlemarkt.
